Description
Vitex lucens, commonly known as pūriri, is a large, evergreen tree native to New Zealand, growing up to 20 meters tall. It thrives in coastal and lowland forests, featuring dense, glossy, dark green leaves and a spreading canopy. Pūriri produces vibrant pink to red tubular flowers throughout the year, attracting birds and pollinators. These are followed by bright red berries, a vital food source for native birds like kererū. Known for its durable and strong timber, Vitex lucens was traditionally used by Māori for tools and structures. It is valued in ecological restoration for providing habitat and enhancing biodiversity.
