Description
Melicope ternata, commonly known as wharangi, is a small, evergreen tree or shrub native to New Zealand. It thrives in coastal and lowland forests, reaching up to 5 meters tall. The plant features glossy, bright green trifoliate leaves with a citrus-like aroma when crushed. In spring and summer, it produces small, greenish-white flowers that attract pollinators, followed by distinctive three-lobed seed capsules. Melicope ternata is an important species for native revegetation projects, providing food and habitat for birds and insects. It is also used in traditional Māori medicine. Hardy and adaptable, it grows well in various soil types and conditions.
