Description

Dianella nigra, commonly known as New Zealand blueberry or turutu, is a hardy, clump-forming perennial native to New Zealand. It thrives in forests, coastal areas, and scrublands, reaching up to 1 meter in height. The plant features slender, strap-like green leaves and delicate, star-shaped pale blue to purple flowers in spring and summer. These are followed by striking, iridescent blue berries that provide food for native birds. Dianella nigra is drought-tolerant and well-suited for landscaping, erosion control, and ecological restoration projects. Despite its attractive berries, they are mildly toxic to humans if consumed in large quantities.
