Description
Cyperus ustulatus, commonly known as giant umbrella sedge or toetoe upoko-tangata, is a robust, perennial sedge native to New Zealand. It thrives in wetlands, coastal areas, and disturbed sites, growing up to 1.5 meters tall. The plant forms dense clumps of upright, dark green, grass-like leaves with sharp edges. In summer, it produces distinctive brown to purple-black flower spikelets on tall stems, which attract pollinators. Cyperus ustulatus plays a crucial role in erosion control, wetland restoration, and providing habitat for native wildlife. It is also used in landscaping for its striking appearance and resilience to harsh conditions.
