Description
Chionochloa flavicans, commonly known as snowgrass, is a perennial, tussock-forming grass native to New Zealand, particularly found in subalpine and alpine regions. It typically grows up to 1.5 meters tall, with fine, upright leaves that form dense, tufted clumps. The plant’s leaves are light green, turning golden-brown in winter, creating a striking contrast in high-altitude landscapes. In summer, it produces narrow, feathery flower panicles that sway in the wind. Chionochloa flavicans thrives in cold, well-drained soils and is valued for its role in soil stabilization, erosion control, and providing habitat for native wildlife in harsh, elevated environments.
