Description
Apodasmia similis, commonly known as oioi or jointed wire rush, is a coastal wetland plant native to New Zealand. This rhizomatous, reed-like perennial belongs to the Restionaceae family and thrives in estuarine environments, salt marshes, and wet sand dunes. It features upright, segmented, jointed stems with a distinctive grey-green hue and brown sheathing leaf bases. Oioi is well-adapted to saline and waterlogged soils, making it an excellent choice for erosion control and habitat restoration. It provides shelter for wildlife and helps filter pollutants from water. The plant is also used in traditional Māori weaving and wetland restoration projects.
