Description
Alectryon excelsus, commonly known as tītoki, is a medium-sized, evergreen tree native to New Zealand, reaching up to 10 meters tall. It thrives in coastal and lowland forests, featuring glossy, dark green, pinnate leaves with a wavy edge. In spring, it produces small, inconspicuous red flowers, followed by striking seed capsules that split open to reveal bright red flesh surrounding a shiny black seed. These seeds are a valuable food source for native birds. Alectryon excelsus is often used in ecological restoration and urban landscaping due to its hardy nature, drought tolerance, and ability to attract wildlife.
