Description
Agathis australis, commonly known as kauri, is one of New Zealand’s most iconic and ancient trees, capable of growing over 50 meters tall and living for more than 2,000 years. It thrives in northern New Zealand’s lowland forests, featuring a massive, straight trunk with smooth, gray bark that sheds in flakes. Its dense, dark green foliage consists of leathery, lance-shaped leaves. Kauri produces small, cone-like seed structures and plays a crucial role in forest ecosystems. Highly valued for its durable timber and resin, it has been heavily logged in the past.
